چکیده

The onset of multi-pulsing, a ubiquitous phenomenon in laser cavities, imposes a fundamental limit on the maximum energy delivered per pulse. Managing the nonlinear penalties in the cavity becomes crucial for increasing the energy and suppressing the multi-pulsing instability. A Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) allows for the reduction of governing equations of a mode-locked laser onto a low-dimensional space. The resulting reduced system is able to capture correctly the experimentally observed pulse transitions. Analysis of these models is used to explain the sequence of bifurcations that are responsible for the multi-pulsing instability in the master mode-locking and the waveguide array mode-locking models. As a result, the POD reduction allows for simple and efficient way to characterize and optimize the cavity parameters for achieving maximal energy output.

Quantum dot based mode locked lasers for optical frequency combs. (Lasers à blocage de modes à base de boîtes et bâtonnets quantiques pour les peignes de fréquences optiques)

Optical frequency combs, generating tens of equally spaced optical carriers from a single laser source, are very attractive for next-generation wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) communication systems. This PhD thesis presents a study on the optical frequency combs generated by mode-locked laser diodes based on low-dimensional semiconductor nanostructures. In this work, the mode-locking per...

Analysis of Laser Pulse Chirping in Mode-Locked Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers

Mode-locked vertical-cavity lasers have a large cross-sectional area and consequently a large saturation energy and large peak powers. We analyze excess optical bandwidth generation in these lasers and find that self-phase modulation due to optical pumping and gain saturation is the dominant factor in inducing laser pulse chirping. The large magnitude of the chirp makes intracavity prism-pair c...

Hybrid Mode Locked Fiber Ring Laser

Mode locked pulse generation has been reported using both active and passive mode locking schemes. Active mode locking technique has been proven to be an effective way to generate high-repetition-rate pulses by incorporating a modulator inside the laser cavity. Compared to actively mode locked lasers, passively mode locked lasers can generate pulse train at ultrashort pulse width but with relat...

Low phase noise hybrid silicon mode-locked lasers

In this paper, we review recent results on hybrid silicon mode-locked lasers with a focus on low phase noise optical pulse generation. Taking a high level design approach to lowering phase noise, we show the need for long on-chip optical delay lines for mode-locked lasers to reach and overcome material limits. Key results include demonstration of the longest (cavity length 9 cm) integrated on-c...
